McKool Smith has been recognized in The National Law Journal’s listing of the “Top 100 Verdicts” in 2013 for securing a $173 million verdict for ParkerVision, Inc. in a patent infringement dispute against Qualcomm.

Each year, The National Law Journal's VerdictSearch affiliate scours court records to compile a listing of the nation's largest verdicts. McKool Smith's win on behalf of ParkerVision ranks as the 11th largest verdict in the country in 2013, and the year’s second largest patent infringement verdict.

The trial, which was held in two phases, commenced on October 7, 2013 before Judge Roy B. Dalton, Jr. in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. The first phase, which addressed invalidity and direct and indirect infringement, ended on October 17 when the jury found that ParkerVision’s patents are valid and that Qualcomm infringed each of the four patents-in-suit, which relate to direct conversion receiver technology used in high-performance wireless telecommunications devices. The second phase of the trial followed immediately on October 17 and concluded on October 24, when the same jury awarded ParkerVision $173 million in damages for Qualcomm's direct and indirect infringement of the patents-in-suit.
