McKool Smith Attorney Coaches UT Moot Court Team to National Championship

35th annual Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition

AUSTIN – A moot court team from The University of Texas School of Law recently won the national title in the 35th annual Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition.  McKool Smith, PC, sponsors the university’s intellectual property moot court teams.

The team of Jared Hoggan and Alexis Steinberg defeated Loyola Law School in the championship round in Washington, D.C. A second UT team, consisting of Christopher Mierzejewski and Siddartha Rao, had won the regional championship in Houston and also had advanced to the national rounds of the of the American Intellectual Property Law Association event.

McKool Smith principal Pierre J. Hubert and his wife, Austin attorney Jennifer Kuhn, have coached the UT teams to four national titles in the past five years.

“These students work incredibly hard, and deserve every bit of recognition they receive,” says Mr. Hubert. “Only the top two teams from each of the four regional competitions advance to the national rounds, so it is indeed special to have both of the UT teams reach nationals, and then to have a UT team with the national championship.”

As is the tradition for all national championships at The University of Texas, the IP moot court team was honored with the lighting of the university’s Tower on April 29, 2008. In recognition of the championship the Tower was lighted entirely orange with a white number “1” for the night.

The American Intellectual Property Law Association hosts the Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition, one of the largest national moot court competitions in the nation. The competition is named for the late Honorable Giles Sutherland Rich, Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

McKool Smith has more than 90 attorneys in Dallas, Austin, Marshall, New York and Washington, D.C., handling commercial and intellectual property litigation for national and international clients. The firm is recognized as one of the premier litigation law firms in the United States, having earned significant courtroom victories for clients such as American Airlines, BearingPoint, Ericsson, Electronic Data Systems, Lockheed Martin, Medtronic Inc., and Sony Ericsson.
