McKool Smith featured in The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS – McKool Smith is featured in a recent story published by The Dallas Morning News that examines the prominent role of patent litigation in today’s business environment. The firm’s work on behalf of technology provider i4i Inc. in its patent battle against Microsoft is spotlighted in the story, available here

McKool Smith principal Doug Cawley served as lead counsel for i4i in the company’s claims that Microsoft used an i4i patent to produce the popular Word software program. The case was decided in May 2009 when a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas returned a verdict of $200 million on behalf of i4i. The court later entered a judgment of $290 million in favor of i4i and ordered Microsoft to stop selling versions of Word that infringed the i4i patent.

Mr. Cawley is quoted in the story about how he enjoys helping entrepreneurial companies face off against corporate giants like Microsoft.

"It's rewarding to me because this is a tiny company with people who have struggled against huge odds for years in this case," Mr. Cawley says in the article.
