J.R. Johnson is an associate in McKool Smith’s Austin and Dallas offices. His experience includes work on complex commercial and patent litigation matters.
J.R. received his B.A. from the University of Chicago, where he was awarded Special Honors from the Philosophy Department and graduated with Honors from the College. While attending the University of Texas School of Law, J.R. worked part-time with McKool Smith on a number of cases, including the pro-bono representation of a Texas prisoner before the Supreme Court of the United States. Also during law school, J.R. was a member of the McKool Smith team that represented a class of over 2,000 retired NFL players, alleging breaches of contractual and fiduciary duties related to the licensing of the class members’ images, in a lawsuit against the NFL Players Association and its licensing subsidiary, Players Inc. J.R. also worked at the Office of the Attorney General of Texas during law school, where he represented the State of Texas in lawsuits alleging constitutional violations.
J.R’s practice since joining the firm full-time has involved a wide range of litigation, including software-patent, asset-backed security and natural gas-royalty matters.
Representative Matters
- Eolas Technologies Inc. - On a team representing internet technology provider Eolas in a patent infringement suit against multiple defendants regarding advanced browser technology. J.R. also represents Eolas in a breach of contract action filed in the Northern District of Illinois concerning a patent license agreement.
- MetroPCS - Participated on a team representing MetroPCS in a contract dispute relating to auction-rate securities and collateralized debt obligations (“CDOs”).
- Hall Phoenix/Inwood Ltd. - On a team that represented Hall Phoenix/Inwood Ltd. and Hall Performance Energy Partners 4 in a suit related to investments made in a limited partnership engaged in the business of drilling for and producing natural gas in West Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.
