Bahrad Sokhansanj is an associate in the Silicon Valley office of McKool Smith Hennigan. Bahrad earned Bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and clerked at the Federal Circuit, experiences which have afforded him a unique perspective on his trial practice.

At McKool Smith, Bahrad has represented both large and small companies across a wide range of technologies and industries, including patent and trade secret litigation before Federal Courts and the International Trade Commission. His work has included pre-filing investigation, taking and defending numerous fact, corporate, and expert witness depositions, arguing Markman, and drafting briefs for substantive and dispositive motions. He has also represented inmates in civil rights litigation through the Northern District of California's Federal Pro Bono project.

Prior to joining McKool Smith, Bahrad was a Law Clerk to the Honorable Chief Judge Sharon Prost in the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit after practicing at another firm. He graduated from Columbia Law School, where he was the Articles Editor for the Columbia Journal of Race and Law and participated in the Environmental Law Clinic for two years, working on behalf of environmental non-profit organizations in regulatory, state court, and federal court proceedings.

Before becoming an attorney, Bahrad studied electrical engineering and applied physics, worked as a research scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and was a biomedical engineering professor at Drexel University.

Representative Matters

  • Immersion v. Fitbit. Represents Immersion in patent infringement litigations in China and the U.S. (Northern District of California) regarding haptic feedback technology in wearable devices, including coordinating global patent enforcement strategy.
  • Arconic (f/k/a Alcoa). Represents Arconic (f/k/a Alcoa) in trade secret litigation in the Northern District of Georgia regarding aluminum aerospace parts.
  • Cambria v. Wilsonart et al. Represented Wilsonart in design patent infringement litigation at the International Trade Commission regarding quartz countertops.
  • Ericsson v. Apple. Represented Ericsson in a patent infringement dispute against Apple in the Eastern District of Texas regarding cellular phone voice processing chipsets and RF circuit design.
  • Allure Energy.  Represented Allure in a patent infringement disputes regarding smart thermostats against Nest in the Eastern District of Texas and against Honeywell the Western District of Texas.
