Douglas A. Cawley, a principal in McKool Smith’s Dallas office, has been named one of the top five intellectual property attorneys in Texas by the publishers of Texas Lawyer newspaper.

Mr. Cawley is being recognized for his work in intellectual property cases as part of Texas Lawyer’s upcoming “Go-To Guide,” a listing of Texas’ top lawyers in 18 different practice areas. The “Go-To Lawyer” honors will be presented to individual attorneys in each practice area category during a special event hosted by Texas Lawyer in December.

Mr. Cawley has represented clients in complex courtroom cases for more than 30 years. His victories include a $156 million verdict against AT&T, which was ranked as a "Top 100 Verdict" in 2007 by The National Law Journal. He scored another “Top 100 Verdict” the following year by securing a $21 million award against Nintendo. In 2010, Mr. Cawley obtained a $105.75 million verdict on behalf of VirnetX Holding Corporation against Microsoft, which again increased his “Top 100 Verdict” wins. He also obtained a $290 million judgment for client i4i against Microsoft, which was unanimously affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011. That case also was ranked as a “Top 100 Verdict” and named "Patent Case of the Year" by Managing Intellectual Property magazine, in addition to being listed as one of Corporate Counsel magazine's "Ten Biggest IP Litigation Wins" of 2011.

Texas Lawyer is the state’s oldest independent publication devoted to the legal industry. The “Go-To Guide” is published every five years based on nominations solicited through an online submission process. No self-nominations are allowed, and there is no way to purchase a spot on the list. The final five honorees in each practice area category are handpicked by editors from Texas Lawyer following a thorough review of the nominees’ legal track records and interviews with other lawyers, clients, and judges. Overall, only 90 attorneys in the state are named as finalists, with only 18 attorneys recognized in the final “Go-To Guide.”

This is the latest in a string of recent accolades that Mr. Cawley has received. He was named the Dallas Intellectual Property Litigation "Lawyer of the Year" by Best Lawyers in 2011 and is consistently listed in the publication for his work in intellectual property law. Earlier this year, he was nominated for Texas "Litigator of the Year" by Benchmark Litigation.  Mr. Cawley is ranked as a leading intellectual property lawyer by Chambers USA and is included in theLawdragon 500 listing of "Leading Lawyers in America."

With more than 170 trial lawyers across offices in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Marshall, New York, Silicon Valley, and Washington, DC, McKool Smith has established a reputation as one of America’s leading trial firms. The firm has won more National Law Journal and VerdictSearch “Top 100 Verdicts” over the last five years than any other law firm. McKool Smith represents leading clients across a broad range of practice areas, including complex commercial litigation, intellectual property, bankruptcy, and white collar defense.
