Since July 1, 2017, McKool Smith’s Texas-based lawyers have helped score a sweeping series of courtroom wins in high-profile disputes.

On July 26, 2017, McKool Smith secured a $9.4 million jury verdict on behalf of legendary music producer Quincy Jones against the late music icon Michael Jackson’s production company, MJJ Productions Inc., in a breach of contract and royalty dispute. Mr. Jones produced a number of the King of Pop’s most acclaimed albums, including “Off the Wall,” “Thriller,” and “Bad.” The lawsuit centered on allegations that MJJ Productions Inc., which is controlled by Michael Jackson's estate, failed to pay Mr. Jones royalties for the soundtrack to "This Is It" and Jackson’s Cirque du Soleil productions, which both feature several musical hits produced by Jones.

In November 2017, the firm secured a trial win before the International Trade Commission (ITC) on behalf of TiVo's Rovi Corp. against Comcast Corp. The ITC found that Comcast violated Section 337, which involves imports, and issued both an exclusion order and a cease and desist order prohibiting Comcast from importing into the U.S., or otherwise distributing after importation, any set-top box that infringes Rovi’s patents.

The following month, on December 7, 2017, McKool Smith secured a $75 million jury verdict on behalf of Ericsson against TCL Communication in a patent infringement dispute concerning wireless telecommunications technology. The verdict was recognized as a “Top 100 Verdict” of 2017 by VerdictSearch. In May 2018, the Court entered a final judgment for Ericsson for more than $110 million, including approximately $10.2 million in prejudgment interest and $25 million in enhanced damages, due to TCL’s willful infringement.

With more than 175 trial lawyers across offices in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Marshall, New York, Silicon Valley, and Washington, D.C., McKool Smith has established a reputation as one of America’s leading trial firms. Since 2006, the firm has secured eleven nine-figure jury verdicts and twelve eight-figure jury verdicts. The firm has also won more VerdictSearch and The National Law Journal "Top 100 Verdicts" over the last ten years than any other law firm in the country. Courtroom successes like these have earned McKool Smith critical acclaim and helped the firm become what The Wall Street Journal describes as “one of the biggest law firm success stories of the past decade.” McKool Smith represents clients in complex commercial litigation, intellectual property, insurance recovery, bankruptcy, and white collar defense matters.
