Overview
Joseph Micheli is an Associate in McKool Smith’s Dallas office. His practice focuses on patent litigation involving complex technologies, including telecommunications, video coding, and software engineering. Joseph has experience across all stages of litigation, from pre-suit diligence through discovery, Markman, summary judgment, and trial. He is skilled in analyzing technical issues, reviewing source code, deposing technical experts, and developing litigation strategies. Joseph is also a registered patent practitioner with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
During his time with the firm, Joseph has also contributed to technical strategy at the International Trade Commission, achieving a favorable outcome in a dispute over video coding patents. Prior to joining the firm, Joseph was the lead technologist in a patent case involving video streaming technology, where he helped secure a jury finding of infringement.
He earned his J.D. from SMU Dedman School of Law and holds a B.S. in Physics with a minor in Philosophy from the University of Texas at Dallas, where he conducted research in organic photovoltaics at the Nanotech Institute. He is also a contributor to McKool Smith’s AI Litigation Tracker blog and has published on the topic of generative-AI and copyright. Outside of the firm, Joseph is an open-source software enthusiast and has contributed to projects including Rust graphics libraries, personal blogging software, and media-management services.
