McKool Smith Principal Steven Rizzi successfully argued an appeal before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on behalf of Advanced Semiconductor Engineering. On November 17, 2023, the court affirmed the PTAB’s decision invalidating U.S. Patent 6,624,007, owned by Bell Semiconductor and covering methods for making semiconductor devices. Principal Ramy Hanna was also on the brief.
ASE petitioned for inter partes review of the patent after it was asserted against several of ASE’s customers for its semiconductor packaging services. After Bell disclaimed one of the claims, the PTAB found all remaining claims of the patent invalid in its final written decision in June 2022.
